Local Weather Details.

The weather in the Dordogne region can be summed-up generally by a hot and sunny summer, and likewise a generally, colder, crisper and sunnier aspect in the winter months.

We say colder, as like most of continental europe, the winters can be colder temperature wise to that of the UK (with its milder, wetter, damp Atlantic air), but it is a drier, sunnier cold rather than a dull, damp, grey cold. There seems to be a distinct separation of the four seasons, with both Spring and Autumn starting and ending a good month or so earlier and later than that of the UK, and several degrees warmer of course.

Spring and autumn can be accompanied by early misty and foggy starts, which soon lifts to leave a gloriously sunny day. Summer, as mentioned can and does get hot, and as a result will lead to occasional (and sometimes spectacular) Thunderstorms in the evenings and night-times, but these soon pass and clear. Late Autumn, and it seems to be getting later and later (nothing to do with global warming of course?), can see some very strong gales, storms, and rain, not unlike the UK, but again, these soon pass to leave clear sunny skies.

We have even found the autumn half-term period to be particularly warm, sunny and pleasant with temperatures reaching a lovely 24-26 degrees whilst staying there in October 2006.

There is not a lot of snow in the region during the winter months, though only last year (end January 2006) whilst we were staying there, they had the worst snow in the Dordogne region in 22 years. During the course of 24 hours some 30cm of snow fell, catching everyone out by surprise and leaving most roads, towns and villages impassable for 24 hours or so until the authorities got their act together and managed to clear, salt & grit the roads. A thaw rapidly followed on the second day anyway. Having said that, we all enjoyed playing in the deep snow for several hours on the day the snow was falling and into the following day.
